Of questions and art

Update: 2013-08-19 23:40 GMT
Continuing with the recent trend of showcasing some of the best movies from the Dharamshala International Film Festival (DIFF), White Crane Arts & Media Trust, in association with blueFrog, will be screening Marina Abramovic: The Artist Is Present. The screenings are held on the last Sunday of every month and have been on since April. The last Sunday in September will see the last movie on the list.

The documentary, Marina Abramovic: The Artist Is Present, draws one into the world of Serbian performance artist Marina Abramovic, known for embracing danger and endurance, as she prepares for her 2010 retrospective show at New York’s Museum of Modern Art. Abramovic - the 65-year-old’s ten-week-long MoMA performance in which she sits still on a chair in front of hundreds of visitors who come before her, one after the other, day in, day out.

Seductive, fearless, and outrageous, Marina Abramovic has been redefining what art is for nearly 40 years. Using her own body as a vehicle, pushing herself beyond her limits – and at times risking her life in the process – she creates performances that challenge, shock, and move us.

Marina Abramovic: The Artist Is Present follows the artist as she prepares for what may be the most important moment of her life: a major new retrospective of her work, taking place at The Museum of Modern Art. To be given a retrospective at one of the world’s premier museums is the most exhilarating sort of milestone. For Marina, it is far more: it is the chance to finally silence the question she has been hearing over and over again for four decades: 'But why is this art?'

The documentary has received widespread critical acclaim since its world premiere at Sundance Film Festival 2012. The documentary feature has been the recipient of numerous awards, noteworthy amongst them - Panorama Audience Award Best Documentary Berlinale 2012, Audience Award at Champs-Élysées Film Festival 2012, Special Jury Award at Sheffield Doc/Fest 2012, Lancia Celebration of Lives Award at Biografilm Festival 2012.
