NTPC Vindhyachal, the country's largest power plant with an installed capacity of 4760 mw has taken novel initiative in generating green power through Bio Gas and Bio Diesel in association with NTPC –NETRA.
Vindhyachal has developed a mini integrated bio-diesel unit within the township premises that was inaugurated in 2014 by Special Secretary (Power) R N Choubey.
Committed to carry out research in development of different types of bio fuel, bio west utilisation to harness green power, NTPC –NETRA is taking up various initiatives in NTPC projects to make the NTPC colonies in line with smart city.
The bio diesel plant at Vindhyachal is one of first success stories, where it has a capacity to produce around 110 liters of bio diesel per day and 24 kw of bio gas from the seeds of Karanj trees (Botanical name Pangania-pinnata). Vindhyachal has planted around 1.55 lacks of Karanj tree during 2004 to 2011 in and around it projects. The expected yield of fruits is 225 tons in 2016-17.
The by products (glycerin, cake and ash) generated from the plants are also very helpful like cakes as insecticides, glycerin as cosmetic ingredients and ash as soil conditions.
Presently, the green power generated from this bio diesel unit is being utilised by the adjacent government Hindi school in the township.
The bio diesel produced is lately being used along with the diesel for running the township heavy vehicle. Keeping in tune with the Prime Minister’s mission for green power, this is one of the humble states taken up by NTPC Vindhyachal in addition to its initiative in generation of solar power.
