Now, JNU to offer masters programme in philosophy

Premier educational institution, Jawahar Lal Nehru University, known for it's humanistic study across the world, has decided to launch a higher studies programme in philosophy for the first time.

JNU plans to introduce an MA programme in philosophy from the forthcoming 2013-14 academic session.

S K Sopory, vice-chancellor of JNU announced the decision and said ‘We decided to introduce this course as there was a huge demand for higher studies in the subject among the university students.'

Sopory added, 'The upcoming two year programme will have 10 compulsory and six optional courses’. Students will get admission after an entrance test which will carry a total of 100 marks and will test the students on their understanding of history of philosophy, metaphysics, epistemology, logic, ethics, aesthetics, social and political philosophy.'

The compulsory courses are Moral and Social Philosophy, Philosophical studies: Problems and Perspectives, Readings in the 20th Century Indian Philosophy, Readings in Analytic Philosophy and Phenomenology, Epistemology and Metaphysics: Issues and Problems of Knowing and Being, Logic and Scientific Methods, Philosophy of Language, Philosophy of Social Sciences, Seminar Course: Reading a philosopher and Seminar course: Project on a Philosophical Theme.

The optional courses focus on a wide range of philosophical issues of inter-disciplinary concerns and contemporary significance.

The last date of submitting application forms is 28 March. The eligibility criteria for the admission in the Philosophy course is a Bachelor’s degree with at least 50 per cent marks in Social Sciences and Humanities and 55 per cent in Science and Technology disciplines.
