Noida CMO knocks on all doors but no headway in extortion calls case

Update: 2012-10-15 00:38 GMT
The police is still groping in dark about the threat call made for ‘protection money’ to Chief Medical Officer [CMO] of Noida, R K Garg.

Though police have stepped up the security of the doctor, they have not been able to trace the criminals, even though the doctor mentioned the name of the caller in the police complaint.

‘We are investigating the matter and will soon nab them. We have stepped up his security and are in his regular touch,’ said Praveen Kumar, Senior Superintendent of Police [SSP], Noida. The CMO had complained to the police regarding receiving the call and threat for ‘protection money’ on last Thursday.

According to the CMO, the caller demanded Rs 10 lakh and threatened with dire consequences in case the money was not paid. According to the police complaint, a caller, reportedly identified as Rakesh Bhati of the Amit Kasana gang, told Garg to pay Rs 10 lakh as ‘protection money’ for himself and his family or be ready for death.

Although police are yet to register a case, the chief medical officer [CMO] has been provided with security. Garg has, however, alleged police inaction and written to Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav.

According to the police complaint, the first call came on 11 October at 4.15 pm. Subsequently, three more calls came within half-an-hour on the same day at 4.18 pm, 4.23 pm and 4.39 pm. The caller threatened him and his family with dire consequences, if the money was not paid.

‘I kept on getting similar calls from the same telephone number on the evening of 12 October and again on the 13th morning,’ said Dr Garg. The last call on Saturday warned Garg to not take the matter lightly and expect serious consequences as he had gone to police.

Besides the chief minister, Garg has also written to the principal secretary [Health], the director general [Law and Order], and other senior police and administrative officials.

‘Why are police taking so long to track the calls?’ asked a worried Garg.

‘This is a personal threat to a government official and I expect immediate action. Police are taking so long to track a phone number despite repeated calls coming from it,’ he added.

According to sources, similar threats had been received by some other senior officials of the GB Nagar district administration. However, police has refuted the claims and claimed to be in receipt of only one such complaint.
