Nodal centre doesn’t count death of North civic body worker as dengue casualty

Update: 2013-09-10 00:10 GMT
The nodal centre of dengue in the city has not counted the first dengue casualty, a contractual employee of North Delhi Municipal Corporation, in its record. A report on the spread of the disease in the city released by the centre on Monday claims no death due to the disease so far.

'We don't consider any death caused by dengue unless the disease is confirmed by Elisa Test. In this case Elisa Test was not done so we can't count it under dengue deaths,' said Y S Mann, director, press and information of North DMC and East DMC. According to a private hospital in Shalimar Bagh of North DMC area, a domestic breeding checker (DBC) employee, Tarun (24), died from dengue on 1 September.

According to sources, the private hospitals generally perform rapid kit test for detection of dengue to provide immediate relief which is not recorded. 'Under the direction of the central government we declare a person to be suffering from dengue only when Elisa Test confirms the infection,' added Mann. According to sources, several private hospitals and clinics in the city who treat dengue and related symptoms don't have facility for Elisa Test.

'At least two persons have died due to dengue in my constituency but the corporation has not included them in the list of deaths due to dengue,' said Mohan Bhardhwaj, deputy chairman of standing committee in North DMC. Like Bhardwaj several councillors claim deaths from dengue in their wards but the department rejects them, in the absence of Elisa Test certificate.

In a status report on dengue release by the nodal centre 93 new cases of dengue have been reported in the first week of September, of which 50 were reported from North DMC area, 24 from South DMC, nine from East DMC and two cases from New Delhi Municipal Council area. So far 255 cases have been reported in the city. The figure last year was only 55. All these dengue cases have been confirmed by Elisa Test claims Mann.
