With days remaining for filing of nominations, no candidate has filed his or her papers yet in any of the three Assembly seats for which by-polls are scheduled on 25 November. The last date to register nomination is 5 November, with Tuesday being a holiday for Muharram.
On the other hand, Delhi Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung has told the Supreme Court that he would meet all political party leaders to discuss the possibility of government formation in the Capital but Raj Niwas has not been able to send out any letters to anyone till now.
In the BJP office, the election committee is busy holding a meeting which is scheduled to go on till late night. Sources, however, claimed that three names are doing the rounds — Delhi BJP president Satish Upadhayay from Mehrauli and South Delhi MP Ramesh Bidhuri’s nephew Vikram Bidhuri from Tughlaqabad while from Krishna Nagar, former Mayor Dr Kanwar Sen may be fielded.
According to the announcement, by-polls will be held in Krishna Nagar, Tughlaqabad and Mehrauli seats on 25 November. These seats fell vacant after party leaders Harsh Vardhan, Parvesh Sahib Verma and Ramesh bidhuri were elected to the Lok Sabha.
According to Congress sources, fresh faces will be given tickets in the by-polls in Tughlaqabad, Krishna Nagar and Mehrauli seats.
Tughlaqabad is said to be a BJP stronghold where people had re-elected the sitting MLA Ramesh Bidhuri in December 2013 with 34,009 votes.
A Gujjar-dominated belt, where the elections are fought along the lines of caste and class, the Congress bagged the third position in this constituency during the last election.
If by-poll results go in favour of BJP, the party can then go for fresh elections in all the 70 seats or can take a shot on government formation and work relentlessly for the people of Delhi before going for fresh elections, said a senior BJP leader.
