Online registration for admission for students of reserved category (SC/ST and physically handicapped) is not free this year in University of Delhi (DU) unlike last year. While the general category and OBC students had to pay Rs 50 for registering online, the university did not charge any fee from students of reserved category last year.
There has been no clarification issued by the university authorities as to why the move was taken. Sources have informed that the decision was taken during the meeting chaired by the Vice-Chancellor (VC).
‘I don’t know the reason behind this decision. It must have been taken during the meeting. You must ask VC about the reason,’ said the source. The university has also increased the cost of online registration to Rs 100 this year which was Rs 50 last year. The online registration charges for this year are the same as offline charges. Last year, online cost was low in order to encourage aspiring students to apply online. While the form charges are Rs 100 for the general category, the reserved category will have to pay Rs 50 for admission forms.
Meanwhile, the second day of admission was quite smooth as compared to the first. The start of admission was marked by various protests by student organisations against the four-year undergraduate programme (FYUP), chaos at admission centres due to huge crowd of aspiring students and mismanagement as well at the respective centres.
The online admission process seems to be picking up pace gradually. On Monday, by 4 pm as many as 13,400 aspiring students registered online, while the total number has exceeded 60,000 on the second day. Around 42,000 students registered online on Tuesday.
