No weapons please this is school. This seems to be the message Uttar Pradesh Government has sent to the teachers asking them not to carry weapons with them in the class rooms as ‘it sends a bad message among the students’.
The Basic Education Minister Ram Govind Chaudhry said that the govt would take strict action against teachers who were found carrying weapons in the class rooms. ‘The District Inspector of Schools and the Principals have been told in no uncertain terms to keep an eye on such development and inform the higher-up as and when such incidents are reported,’ Chaudhry told a reporter.
There were reports about increase in gun culture in schools. A few months back a student had opened fire at his colleagues in Mainpuri from the licensed revolver. The minister said that govt had also received reports about teachers coming to school with revolvers which were quite visible in classrooms.
‘We have got information that some teachers are carrying weapons during teaching in the class-rooms. In some cases these are not kept in holster but were just tucked in their waist belt. This is against the dignity of the profession and teachers should avoid such show of weaponry,’ Chaudhry said.
In villages many teachers procure arms license because of threat perception. They carry weapons with them wherever they go. And some of them even carry the same to the school.
Teachers have resented this govt order. Mahendra Singh, an office-bearer of UP Madhyamik Shikshak Sangh said in villages enmity is very intense. Land disputes are so normal that there is always a threat on the life of a person. Govt gives arms license for personal protection. How can the ministers can ask the legitimate revolver owner not to carry weapon, he asks.
But he agrees that unnecessary show of might is wrong. ‘Teachers should be asked to keep the arms properly. They should not be allowed to carry double barrel guns inside the school or the class rooms,’ he said.
The Basic Education Minister said that the state govt has even written a letter to the central govt to bring improvement in the basic education system by appointing more teachers.
