Delhi police failed to learn a lesson from the past robbery of Rs 5.25 crore that took place in south Delhi’s Defence Colony in September 2012. No CCTV cameras were installed on the stretch as a result, Delhi police is clueless about the assailants who robed around eight crore from a businessman and his associates on the same stretch at Lajpat Nagar on Tuesday.
Speaking to Millennium Post, a senior police official said, ‘The motive behind installing CCTV cameras is to keep a record of the events took place in that particular area. Several times, cameras were installed in the area that are poorly lit and are the vulnerable routes of the criminals during dark hours. On the same hand, few cameras are installed in the market areas and on the main roads to track down the incidents.’
But Delhi police failed to install CCTV cameras on several sensitive areas that also includes the most busiest road stretches in the national Capital. As per the data, Delhi police have also identified around 930 dark stretches and 254 vulnerable.
Out of 5,335 CCTV cameras that are supposed to be installed in Delhi, so far only 3091 cameras have been installed. The whole project costs Rs 380 crore and around 2244 CCTV cameras are yet to be installed. According to sources in Delhi police, the area where the robbery of around eight crore took place on Tuesday morning was supposed to be installed with the CCTV cameras.
During the incident, sources said, no PCR van was patrolling around Moolchand flyover, Lajpat Nagar, Defence colony, Jangpura and Barapulla flyover. However, the data in possession with Millennium Post revealed that out of 800 PCR vans available in Delhi there are around 71 PCR vans dedicated to patrol in south-east jurisdiction.
When the reporter followed the route(Moolchand flyover, Lajpat Nagar, Jangpura, Bahrapula flyover) taken by the criminals, not even a single barricading was seen. The crime was executed within six minutes and few minutes after the incident the PCR call was made.
