Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday hinted that nine former ministers in the previous Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) government would be sent to jail on charges of corruption.
While talking to media persons here the CM said that these navratan (nine jewels) had made history in corruption and they would not be spared.
‘Many of the BSP ministers are already in jail. How many of them will go to jail no one knows,’ the chief minister said in response to a query.
The state Vigilance Establishment of Uttar Pradesh police had recommended prosecution against three former ministers, besides cases of disproportionate asset and irregularities to be lodged against six others, including state BSP president Ram Achal Rajbhar, against whom an FIR has been already registered in the Ambedkarnagar district.
Four of the former ministers against whom Vigilance Department initiated action, are already behind bars in another multi-crore rupees scam in the LACCFED which is probed by the Special Investigation Bureau (SIB) of the Cooperative Cell of the state police. Besides, half-a-dozen more former ministers of Ms Mayawati are also facing serious charges in the LACCFED scam and may also find themselves behind the bars any time.
Sources said the state government, soon after completing one year in office, summoned officers of Vigilance Establishment in the end of March and gave them clear direction that inquiries pending against the former ministers of the BSP government should be expedited and dispose off in time bound manner so that appropriate legal proceedings could be made against them.
Those against whom Vigilance sought prosecution sanction order included Rangnath Mishra, Awadhpal Singh Yadav and Badshah Singh.
Prominent against whom Vigilance Establishment already collected evidences of disproportionate assets and now just want government’s sanction to register case included Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council Naseemudeen Siddiqui, Chandra Dev Ram Yadav, Babu Singh Kushwaha, Rakesh Dhar Tripathi, Ramveer Upadhaya.
