Nigam Bodh car accident case: Accused granted bail

The man, who killed one person and severely injured 12 others by crushing them under his SUV at Nigam Bodh Ghat on Sunday night, was released on bail, within 24 hours of his arrest.

The accused, Rishi Kumar (30), in an inebriated state on Sunday night, lost control of his Mahindra Quanto and crushed over men sleeping on the pavement. He was accompanied by his sister-in-law, who was sitting in the navigator seat.

The accused tried to run away after the accident. But he was held by the hundreds of men sleeping at the Yamuna Market in Nigam Bodh, and handed over to the police soon after.

Of the twelve people admitted in four different hospitals close to the accident spot, all were discharged except four, on Tuesday morning, said Madhur Verma, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North). ‘He has been booked under sections 304A, 279, 337 and 338 of the IPC,’ added the DCP.

The deceased has been identified as Ikraj (20), a rag-picker, who breathed his last at the Sushruta Trauma Centre on Monday morning. The accused is a resident of East Delhi and runs a real estate business.
