National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Tuesday issued notice to police seeking a report on the incident relating to the alleged chopping off the hand of a boy for showing disrespect to the husband of a panchayat president.
‘The National Human Rights Commission has observed that the contents of the press report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights of the victim. Accordingly, a notice has been issued to the Superintendent of Police, Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu calling for a report within two weeks,’ it said.
NHRC took suo motu cognisance of the incident, it said in a release.
The gory incident occurred last week when the husband of a Panchayat President and two of his accomplices chopped off the hand of a 17-year-old boy for allegedly sitting cross-legged in his presence. Three persons, including the husband of the panchayat chief, have been arrested by the police.
