Land for the project was allotted to the Delhi police department in 2008 and was scheduled to be completed by 2010. However, the work hasn’t even begun. According to sources, Delhi police is yet to submit the lease documents to the Airport Authority of India (AAI) to get the height clearance to construct the new building.
Sources said the project can start only when the police department submits the documents to AAI which in turn forwards it to the ministry of home affairs for the final clearance. Police have been allotted a site near the T-3 parking space for the project.
‘Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) was supposed to take up the construction. However, the deal never materialised,’ sources said.
The police station will be a few hundreds metres away from T-3 but according to the airport sources the new police station will be equipped with the best equipment and will better than the Palam police station near to Terminal 1D.
There was reportedly some tiff between the Delhi police and DIAL which had already delayed the project. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) is responsible for security at airports across the country. ‘Our men posted at the gates were approached with complainants several times. However, they could not be of much help. In such cases, they informed the control room over the wireless and the complainant were then taken there. A control room outside T-3 should help solve the problem,’ a CISF source added.
Sources further said that even the Delhi police’s new headquarters building, which was supposed to be construed on Parliament Street is yet to get clearance from the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) for the same reason. NDMC has reportedly demanded some papers before giving its nod to the project.
