New mayor in east Delhi, BJP trumps Cong

Senior BJP leader Ram Narayan Dubey was elected Mayor of East Delhi Municipal Corporation (East DMC) by defeating Congress with a huge margin. The BJP leaders claim that they had support of the lone Samajwadi Party councillor in East DMC.

In the election for the coveted post of mayor held on Tuesday, Dubey was voted 44 votes in 68 member electorate while his close rival Rajeev Kumar of Congress got only 22 votes. The electorates include three MLAs and two MPs of the area besides 63 councillors. Among 63 councillors, BJP has 33 councillors, Congress has 19 members, BSP has four councillors, Samajwadi Party one and five independent councillors.

As Congress MLA from Vishwas Nagar constituency Nasseb Singh and Seelampur constituency Mateen Ahmed also voted in the election. According to sources an independent candidate Dharmendra also voted for Congress which lead to 22 votes for Rajeev Kumar. 'Rest of the votes went to BJP candidate,' claimed B B Tyagi, leader of house in East DMC. The newly elected mayor represents Dilshad Garden ward.

'I can't reveal the candidate to whom I caste my vote in the election for the post of mayor,' said Rekha Bashisht, Samajwadi Party councillor who represents Babarpur ward.

Mahendra Ahuja of Vivek Vihar ward was unanimously elected Deputy Mayor in East Delhi. Sanjay Surjan and Sanjay Kaushik of BJP and Varyam Kaur of Congress were unanimously elected members of the standing committee.
