The initiative was taken by South Delhi MP Ramesh Bidhuri, who had approached Delhi’s chief secretary DM Spolia following which the latter conducted the socio-economic survey of Bhati Mines through District Magistrate (South).

‘The socio-economic profile of Bhati village shows that it lies on the last leg of main Chhatarpur Road, flanked by Delhi-Haryana Border in south sharing boundary with village Asola on its right and Fatehpur Beri and Dera Mandi on the left. On a flipside, this is also an indication of the fact that not much commercial activity takes place in the area and that it is under-developed despite being in south Delhi area,’ said Spolia. He also added that according to revenue record, the area of the village is 18,403 bigha and 03 biswa out of which 5,022 Bigha and 10 Biswa is for the purpose of cultivation.

The Asola Bhati Wildlife Sanctuary also lies in they village. ‘In 1996, 11,101 bigha and 19 biswa of the Gram Sabha land was notified under ridge in the Delhi gazette. Thus, a large part of the village rests with the forest department. The revenue section of Bhati has three sub-parts — Bhati Kalan, Bhati Khurd and Sanjay Colony. Another part is Har Swarup Colony which is dominated primarily by Gujjar community people. They do not own agricultural land Almost all households have livestock which serves as the lifeline of the economy of the village,’ Spolia said.

This study is only the first baby step towards making Bhati a model village, the chief secretary added.
