A day after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh extended an invitation to PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif to visit India, the latter reciprocated by inviting Singh to Pakistan for his oath-taking ceremony as the new prime minister of the neighbouring nation. Sharif’s party has won majority of seats in the National Assembly elections which was conducted on 11 May. Nawaz has already indicated his desire to normalise ‘roller-coaster’ ties with India.
Prime Minister Singh had lost no time on Sunday in congratulating Sharif on his election victory, which will give him his third term as prime minister of Pakistan, and invited him to visit India at a mutually convenient time.
Even as counting of votes was underway in Pakistan, Singh conveyed India’s desire to work with him to chart a new course in India-Pakistan relations. In a letter to Sharif, Prime Minister Singh said, ‘I look forward to working with you and your government to chart a new course and pursue a new destiny in the relations between our countries. I would also like to extend an invitation to you to visit India at a mutually convenient time.’
Meanwhile, after Nawaz win, riding on hopes of peace and stability, the Karachi Stock Exchange based in Pakistan’s commercial hub gained some 300 points, breaking the KSE-100 index record of 20,000 points, as investors hailed the outcome of the 11 May polls, reported Geo News.
Unofficial results show that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has emerged the single largest party in the National Assembly with cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) standing second and the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) relegated to the third spot.
