New Delhi: Facing criticism over vacant posts of teachers, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked all Central and state universities in the country to fill up the vacant posts of teachers and non-teaching staff of reserved categories.
In a circular sent on Tuesday, the commission has asked all centrally funded universities/colleges/institutions to ensure strict compliance of the government of India orders/rules on the reservation in their institutions.
The decision in this regard has been taken after the Education Ministry had faced the ire of opposition leaders over the shortage of teachers in colleges across the country citing the data released by the Centre in the Monsoon Session of the Parliament about the vacancy of teachers under the reserved category.
After analysing the data, it was reported that Other
Backward Classes (OBCs) were the worst represented, especially at the 'professor' level as out of 313 posts reserved for OBCs at the professor-level across all central universities, only nine of them have been filled so far.
As per the Education Ministry data, out of total 6,688 vacant posts of teachers across the central universities, 1,084 are reserved for Scheduled Castes (SC), 604 for Scheduled Tribes (ST) and 1,684 for OBCs.
As per the UGC letter dated October 19, all universities have been asked to fill all vacant posts and display the reservation roster on their websites.
"You are required to display the reservation roster which is to be updated at regular intervals on your website as per instructions issued by the Govt. of India," the UGC said in its letter.
"You are also requested to fill up remaining backlog identified reserved vacancies of these categories in teaching and non-teaching posts, to furnish a report along with statistical information," the circular added.
