Guwahati: The Election Commission on Friday ordered a repoll in a booth of the Karimganj (North) constituency in Assam’s Sribhumi district following reports of clashes between political party supporters.
The repoll will be conducted at booth number 239, located at Babyland High English School. Voting at the booth will take place on Saturday from 7 am to 5 pm, the poll panel said.
According to officials, the decision was taken after incidents of violence involving supporters of the BJP and Congress during the polling process, prompting the need for fresh voting to ensure free and fair elections.
The Karimganj (North) seat is part of the Barak Valley region and is witnessing a closely fought contest. A total of 14 candidates are in the fray in the constituency. However, the main triangular contest is among BJP candidate Subrata Chaudhari, Congress nominee Jakaria Ahmed, and AIUDF’s Choudhury Hibbur Rasul Usama Mabrur.
Statewide, elections to all 126 assembly constituencies in Assam were held in a single phase on April 9. The polls saw an impressive voter turnout of approximately 85.91 per cent out of the state’s 2.50 crore
electorate.
