To acknowledge women's role in the agriculture sector, Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA government in a meeting on Tuesday decided to mark October 15 as Women Farmers Day.
The marked day will be celebrated to motivate women to adopt agriculture as profession. According to a senior official, women farmers will be acknowledged for their extraordinary contribution and also be awarded by Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).
"Women are the backbone of farming sector and so awareness campaigns will be organised to empower them. Debates, panel discussions on technological advancements will be held in every Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) and agricultural universities," the official said.
"Success stories of women farmers across the world will be shared to boost confidence in them. As a mother is best caretaker of child, similarly women can be proven as the best protector in the farming sector," the official added on sidelines of annual Vice Chancellors and Directors meeting.
According to Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh, the youth form the pillar of strength in the nation. "It is imperative for the development of agriculture that this sector attracts youth," he said. He also said that many initiatives are taken following the openings of new universities and colleges. "Rajendra Agricultural University in Bihar has been upgraded to Rajendra Central Agricultural University and four new colleges have been opened," Singh added.
