Mother of 16/12 gangrape victim seeks enforcement of 'Women Safety Act'

Update: 2018-05-04 16:38 GMT
New Delhi: The mother of the December 16, 2012 gangrape victim on Friday has sought enforcement of "Women Safety Guarantee Rights Act", which should provide an assurance of security to every woman including foreigners.
Under the Act, all rape convictions and decisions to be made under the POCSO Act should be done within six months and that only female doctors should conduct the medical examination of the rape victims.
They also sought that the Domestic Violence Act should be modified, the government must ensure the monetary and social safety of the victims and provide them with employment opportunities.
In context to the justice for Nirbhaya, the victim's mother will be writing to President of India. "I have been struggling for 6 years but still justice has not been served. Nirbhaya's culprits are still alive and I request the authorities to take the appropriate action to ensure they meet their deserved end soon. My daughter's culprits should be immediately hanged till death," said the mother.
She further added that the loopholes and the slow-moving process in our system make me fear that even after 6 years, the delay in their sentencing will continue to happen and I don't know how long it might take.
"The lapses in our laws and the lax attitude of the lawmakers are making our country weak and the faith of all of us is shaken," said the mother. It is shameful that in a country where women are worshipped as the goddess', women on the streets live in fear. What is even more shameful, despite the outrage and our pledges, Delhi still is rated as the rape capital of the country.
"With this letter, I request the Honourable Lawmakers to take swift action on this and set an example for the world. We MUST let the world know that Indian women are safe and have the rights that they deserve," said the mother.
