Indian residents seek mental health support, anxiety and relationship issues are top concerns
Mumbai: Relationship issues emerged as top concerns, reflecting unique urban challenges, on the backdrop of the evolving mental health landscape in India, reveals a comprehensive analysis, done by Mpower, a unit of the Aditya Birla Education Trust and a leading mental wellness provider.
This comprehensive analysis, released on the occasion of its 9th anniversary is based on over 100,000 calls, provides critical insights into the mental health concerns affecting individuals across India.
The following highlights includes key trends and insights of the survey, for instance, the demographics of callers reveal that 60 per cent are male and 40 per cent are female, with young adults aged 18 to 40 accounting for 74 per cent of the total calls. The primary concerns among callers include relationship issues, which make up 33 per cent of all calls, followed by anxiety at 23 per cent, depression at 20 per cent, stress at 16 per cent, and psychiatric disorders at 8 per cent.
Mumbai accounts for 42 per cent of total calls, leading all cities. Concerns are dominated by 34 per cent relationship problems, 23 per cent anxiety, and 21 per cent depression. Meanwhile, gender parity is evident, with a 47 per cent male and 53 per cent female caller ratio. A majority 56 per cent of callers are aged 26-40, reflecting workplace and family pressures.
In the meantime, relationship concerns top the list in Delhi at 38 per cent, followed by 22 per cent anxiety and 18 per cent depression. Gender disparity persists, with 60 per cent male callers. On the other hand, callers aged 26-40 comprise the largest group at 48 per cent.
In parallel, Bengaluru shows a balanced gender ratio among callers, with 49 per cent male and 51 per cent female. Relationship problems (27 per cent) are the most common concern, followed by 26 per cent anxiety and 20 per cent depression. The
largest demographic group comprises individuals aged 26 to 40, accounting for 52 per cent of the callers.
In line with these trends, Pune sees 32 per cent relationship problems and 26 per cent anxiety as the
leading concerns among callers. The majority, 51 per cent, belong to the 18 to 25 age group, reflecting academic and career-related pressures.
Similarly, Kolkata reports a higher-than-average incidence of relationship issues at 45 per cent, followed by 24 per cent anxiety and 17 per cent depression. Young adults aged 18 to 25 make up 49 per cent of the callers in the city.
