New Delhi: Union Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave ex-post facto approval for opening up the ISA membership to all countries that are members of the United Nations on Thursday. It will move a resolution in the first assembly for amending the framework agreement of the International Solar Alliance (ISA). ISA is being initiated by India with more than 121 countries. India and France co-hosted the first ISA summit here in March this year.

Further, this decision is taken to put solar energy in global agenda with the universal appeal for developing and deploying solar energy. Earlier in a meeting, PM Modi suggested that the ISA can potentially replace OPEC as the key block of the supplier of energy in the world. "With the falling prices of solar, we can easily achieve the idea of "One World, One Sun, One Grid", he said.

A government statement said, "Opening the membership of the ISA will put solar energy in global agenda with the universal appeal for developing and deploying solar energy. It will make ISA inclusive, whereby all member countries that are members of the United Nations could become a member. Expanding membership will lead to ISA initiative benefitting the world at large."
