Kolkata: Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina urged India and other nations to maintain pressure on Myanmar government so that they take back Rohingyas to their country as early as possible.
It may be mentioned that at present around 11 lakh Rohingyas took shelter in Bangladesh.
Hasina raised the issue while addressing the inaugural ceremony of Bangladesh Bhavan at Viva Bharati here on Friday morning.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee
were also present in the programme.
Hasina said: "We have given shelter to 11 lakh Rohingyas in Bangladesh. We have given shelter to them on humanitarian ground."
"We have given shelter to the people who were in trouble and distressed. We want that they go back to their
country as early as possible," she said.
Hasina further said: "Bangladesh is a country of 16 crore people. My younger sister Rehana had said that if we can feed 16 crore people then can't you provide food to the 5 to 7 lakh more. I told her that of course, it will be possible and, if needed, we will be sharing our food with them."
"But I expect the support of all in this connection so that a pressure is built up upon Myanmar government so that they can be taken back to their country as early as possible. We expect peace in the area," she said.
