A pro-Tamil activist who hurled a slipper at former National Security Advisor (NSA) MK Narayanan has been remanded to 15 days’ judicial custody, police said on Thursday.

Prabhakaran (35), a resident of Aranthangi in Puthukottai district, was produced before a magistrate on Wednesday night after he was arrested for hurling a slipper at the former West Bengal Governor at the end of a programme held in the city to discuss the future of Sri Lankan Tamil refugees in India. He was later lodged in Puzhal prison.

According to the police, the accused person’s grandparents had moved from Sri Lanka and settled in Tamil Nadu in the 1970s. “Prabhakaran doesn’t seem to be member of any particular movement or organisation but is a sympathiser of Sri Lankan Tamil cause,” a senior police official said, adding that he had participated in many pro-Tamil protests.
