The kidnap-cum-murder case of Jyoti, wife of a Kanpur-based biscuit baron, took an interesting turn with the detention of her husband Piyush Shyamdashani on Tuesday for giving inconsistent statements on why he changed his clothes before informing the local police about the incident.
Investigating officers, while going through the CCTV footage, found Piyush wearing different clothes while having dinner with his wife Jyoti at the well-known Verandah restaurant at Company Bagh crossing and at the time of lodging a report with the police. The investigating officers found it rather unusual that he decided to change his clothes before informing the police that his wife got kidnapped.
It was learnt that Piyush informed the cops about the crime an hour after the incident.
On Monday, Jyoti, a resident of Pandu Nagar in Kakadev area, was kidnapped and brutally murdered by bike-borne goons in Kanpur city in the wee hours. She was returning home with Piyush after having dinner at the restaurant.
Suspicion grew when cops found no evidence of loot from Piyush's car, which was found a few kilometers away from the spot, as claimed by Piyush. Sensing that this could be a pre-planned murder conspiracy, the cops probing the case took Piyush in remand for further interrogation.
Preliminary inquiry revealed that Piyush was reportedly having an affair with a local girl and may also have gotten her pregnant. Jyoti’s mother alleged Piyush used to talk to the woman for hours.
Piyush, a franchise dealer of a popular biscuit company, claimed that eight persons on four bikes intercepted their car in Swaroop Nagar area while they were on their way back a little after midnight.
‘Before I could realise anything, one of the pillion riders attacked me with an iron rod. The kidnappers then forced me out of the car and took Jyoti away in the car,’ Piyush told the cops soon after the incident on Sunday night. On the next day Jyoti’s body, with 14 stab wounds and strangulation marks, was found inside the car near E-block in Panki area. Forensic experts found some of her fingers partially chopped off ‘probably’ when she tried to resist the attackers and three blood-stained knives.
Speaking to the Millennium Post over telephone Inspector General (IG) of Kanpur Zone, Ashutosh Pandey said, ‘We have got some vital leads in the case and we are confident that the mystery would be solved soon.’ On the context of why Piyush was detained, he said, ‘There are some contradictory statements from him, which need to be examined.’
