Ramesh Biduri, MLA (Sangam Vihar) since 2008
Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and General Secretary of Delhi BJP, Ramesh Bidhuri, is considered a politician strongly associated with ground realities. Hard work and loyalty are the mantras for his political career but he firmly believes that luck also plays a great role in politics. In the assembly elections of 2008, he retained the seat with a margin of 25,000 votes, the highest winning margin among BJP candidates.
In the days of his struggle to create a niche in the party, his rivals got Bidhuri expelled from the party three times for ‘indiscipline’, but he never strayed. Finally his hard work, honesty and loyalty were noticed and appreciated with greater responsibilities. In an exclusive interview with Siddheshwar Shukla, he shares his experiences and vision. Excerpts:
How did you join politics?
I joined ABVP in my college days, at Bhagat Singh College of Delhi University and later joined BJP in 1993 as full-time worker. I contested as MLA for the first time from Tughlakabad in 1998 but lost the
elections. Then I won the seat in 2003, from an area that was considered stronghold of the Congress party. I retained it in 2008. In the general elections of 2009, I was handpicked by the party to contest for the post of MP from west Delhi, but lost the seat to a Congress candidate.
How much did your family background help in your political journey?
My father, Late Ram Rikh Bidhuri, was a strong supporter of Jan Sangh but he never contested. Mine is a joint family and I am the first graduate of my family. I did not get any direct support but my family’s moral support is always with me.
What are the major issues in your constituency and what have you done to solve them so far?
The major issues are lack of schools, roads, parks, hospitals and community centres. Under my leadership, eight recreations parks spanning eight acres each, several community centres and girls schools in Harikesh Nagar were constructed. It was due to my work that the party won the Sangam Vihar MLA seat, carved out from Tughlakabad.
What are your dream projects ?
A hundred-bed multi-speciality hospital and girls' college are in my wish list, among several other projects.
What has been the best moment of your political life so far?
A school building was constructed on my own land in 1991, which was demolished by Delhi Development Authority (DDA) on the complaint of some political rivals. I reconstructed that school last week and the admission process is going on. It took over 20 years to fulfill my dream of Shikshalayam Public School in Tughlakabad.
What motivates you to work?
I love to help poor and neglected people. Their blessings give me the motivation to work.
