Murugesan is Delhi HC chief justice

Justice Darmar Murugesan, who was a judge of the Madras High Court, was today sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court.

62-year-old Justice Murugesan after being elevated was transfered to Delhi in the place of Acting Chief Justice A K Sikri, who in turn has taken charge as the Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Lt Governor Tejendra Khanna administered the oath of office to Justice Murugesan at 10 am at a function at Raj Niwas here which was attended by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and other fellow judges of the Delhi High Court.

In view of the swearing-in ceremony of Justice Murugesan, the proceedings in the Delhi High Court commenced at 11.30 am, an hour later than the scheduled time.

Justice Murugesan, born on 10 June 1951, was appointed as a judge of the Madras High Court on 2 March 2000, more than 24 years after he enrolled as a member of the Bar on 27 August 1975.

He was made a permanent judge of the Madras High Court on 13 June 2001.


CM’s CONVOY MEETS WITH MISHAP, 5 HURT

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit’s convoy met with an accident near Red Fort in Old Delhi on Wednesday, in which four security personnel and a senior official sustained minor injuries but she was unharmed.

In the incident four police constables and a senior official, Pravesh Kumar Jha [CM’s Private Secretary] were injured. However, the CM remained unharmed. Apart from this, five vehicles of the entourage were damaged as they collided back to back. ‘The accident took place when a cyclist, coming in the wrong direction, entered the CM’s entourage. The driver, while trying to save the cyclist, applied the brake, following which the car behind it rammed into it,’ said an official.

The car carrying Dikshit had moved well ahead when the incident took place. The CM was going to Delhi Secretariat from Raj Bhavan after attending the swearing-in ceremony of Justice Darmar Murugesan as Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court.

After the incident, Dikshit expressed concern for the injured. According to her, one official fractured two fingers of his right hand.

One injured constable was admitted to AIIMS Trauma Centre, from where he was been discharged later. Another constable had to get stitches on his ear. All injured were discharged after due medical care.
