Diamonds worth around Rs 1 crore was allegedly stolen by one of the notorious ‘thak-thak’ gangs from a Mumbai-based jeweller when he stopped his car at a traffic signal in old Delhi’s Daryaganj area on Monday evening.
The jeweller has been identified as Nilesh Shah. He had come to Delhi to deliver the diamonds to a showroom in Daryaganj.
According to the police, the incident was reported at around 4.30 pm from a traffic light at Netaji
Subhash Chandra Marg in Daryaganj. Shah was the one driving the car. While Shah was waiting for the traffic signal to turn green, a teenager knocked on the window and told him that something from his car had apparently fallen down. When Shah de-boarded the car, another member of he gang decamped with the suitcase full of diamonds by opening the door on the opposite side. The gang also took away his wallet and his mobile phone.
According to sources, grades of the stolen diamonds ranged between 1400 and 1500 carats, with the compounded value amounting of over Rs 1 crore. However, police are yet to ascertain the value of loss. A case of theft by multiple accused was registered at the Daryaganj police station.
In the past, the central district of Delhi Police has warned people of ‘thak-thak’ gangs several times. They commit rampant thefts and flee the crime scene. In the past one year, they have stolen cash, jewellery and other articles worth several crores. However, police haven’t been able to nab them.
