More than 2L structures damaged, 20,000 houses totally destroyed in floods: JK govt to HC
‘Approximately 2,34,516 structures have been damaged, which includes nearly 20,000 completely damaged houses, in the valley excluding district Srinagar. ‘The damages to other houses and structures will be known only when the submerged areas are fully dewatered,’ the state government told the high court.
It was replying to a PIL, filed by two advocates, which alleged the state government did not provide timely relief to the flood-affected people. Denying the allegation, the government said it had established 224 relief camps across the state including 137 in Kashmir Valley.
‘137 relief camps catering to more than one lakh people in Kashmir Valley and 87 in Jammu division were set up. ‘Most of these relief camps have been wound up with the improvement in the flood situation and return of the affected people to their own houses,’ the government said.
It said an amount of Rs 430 crore - Rs 215 crore each for Jammu and Valley regions - was kept at the disposal of respective divisional commissioners for meeting exigencies like ex gratia relief and rehabilitation. .
Meanwhile, union home ministry on Monday said Army and National Disaster Response Force personnel have rescued nearly three lakh people from flood-affected areas in northern Indian state Jammu and Kashmir.
In a status report filed before the Jammu and Kashmir High Court, it said :’Indian Army has deployed 288 columns (approximately 30,000 troops) along with 224 boats. As on 20 September, 2.08 lakh people have been rescued to safer places.’
The high court is hearing a PIL on relief operations in the flood-ravaged state. The ministry of home affairs counsel said the NDRF had deployed 22 teams, consisting of 955 personnel, along with 148 boats and 30 divers for rescue operations and rescued 50,815 people.
‘At present, 10 teams of NDRF are on stand-by in Kashmir. NDRF has established four camps in Srinagar and provided medical aid to 7000 flood victims,’ the counsel said.
He said CRPF personnel have also evacuated nearly 28,000 people to safety from various flood-affected areas in Kashmir.
