Monthly power bills in Delhi?

Update: 2012-09-26 02:45 GMT
Two days after Arvind Kejriwal-led India Against Corruption (IAC) protested against Delhi government on power tariff hike issue and asked people not to pay electricity bills, the government has asked private power distribution companies to charge monthly electricity bills instead of bi-monthly.

Sources said senior Delhi government officials believe that due to the bi-monthly billing system, consumers find bills very high.

Sources said instructions have already been issued to distribution companies to prepare the bills every month so that people do not face the burden of paying a ‘large amount of money at one go’.

Talking to Millennium Post, Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) chairperson P D Sudhakar said, ‘DISCOMS are proposing making the billing  a monthly procedure  and also to revise the new power tariff slab. It is true that we have received a lot of complaints and demands regarding the power tariff slab. We will have to take all factors into account and re-examine the orders before taking any decision.’

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit also supported the proposal.

Three power distribution companies-BSES Rajdhani Power Ltd, BSES Yamuna Power Ltd and Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd-are responsible for providing electricity to residents of Delhi.

Confirming the proposal, Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd spokesperson Ajay Maharaj said, ‘We wrote a letter to the government and recommended that Re 1 subsidy by government should increase, as consumers have a lot of complaints regarding their electricity bills. We also demand that the new power tariff slab should be reconsidered.’

Earlier, Millennium Post reported that power consumers in the national capital may finally be saved from receiving ‘inflated’ power bills after Delhi government made a plea to DERC to look into the matter.

Sources in the DERC and Power department informed that the government has asked for the review of the current revised power tariff slab, wherein every unit consumed is charged at an enhanced rate as soon as the consumer crosses the ceiling of 200 units. Regarding the monthly billing system, Maharaj added, ‘The next bill for our consumers would be after 45 days instead of 60 days’. When contacted, a BSES  official however said, ‘As of now, we are giving bills every two months, but if any kind of orders are received, then we will see to it.’
