Modi sends missive to MPs to set aside funds for toilets

It’s not yet clear whether the letter has been sent only to BJP parliamentarians or to all members of the august house. A source close to an MP, who has received the letter, said, ‘The prime minister has asked MPs to utilise their fund for building toilets for girls in schools of their respective areas.’

‘The letter is an extension of the prime minister’s speech on 68th Independence Day asking all MPs to use their constituency funds for building separate toilets for girl students in schools within a year,’ the source said. The letter by the prime minister is likely to put another financial burden on the parliamentarians’ exchequer. They have been already looking for ways to deal with the human resource development minister’s request to spend their funds to construct ‘dining’ spaces for students to have their mid-day meals.

An MP, who doesn’t want to be named, said, ‘The request of the PM is like an order for us and we have to abide by it,’ adding, ‘This will stall the development projects in the constituencies.’

As the govt has not allocated any fund in the union budget for the construction of toilets for girls, Modi’s letter to MPs would generate a handsome amount for the purpose. Since an MP gets MPLAD fund to the tune of Rs 5 crore for development works in his constituency and if all 545 MPs contribute at least Rs 1 crore each, there would be an amount good enough to expedite the toilets-for-girls scheme.
