Following Union HRD Ministry’s directive to make adequate arrangements for the event, NDMC had ensured live telecast of the speech in all schools under its jurisdiction.

‘We were very excited about the event. Students cheered during the speech. They felt important that so much attention is being paid to them,’ said Achla Kukreti, Principal of Navodya School in Gole Market.

‘There are 60-plus schools under us. Fifty of them bought new TV sets/LEDs and rest hired sets for the occasion,’ NDMC Director, Education, Vidushi Chaturvedi said.

The timings of the schools were tweaked for the event and the students were asked to come in the afternoon to avoid inconvenience of staying back for extra hours. The timings for today were 11.30 am to 5.30 pm, Chaturvedi said.

Narendra Modi’s emphasis on girls’ education touched a cord with the girl students.

‘This is the first time that the Prime Minister addressed students and teachers. He mentioned the dropout rate of girls in the schools owing to many problems. I am very happy that finally someone has talked about making it a priority,’ said Renu, a Class 10 student of a government school in New Delhi Municipal Council area.

However, some students were unhappy about not being selected for the live address at Manekshaw Centre.

‘It would have been better if they had taken students from our school also to Mankeshaw Centre. There were so many students who were cross-talking so we did not understand anything,’ said Rohan Singh, a student of MP Boys Senior Secondary School, Mandir Marg.

‘He spoke about his life and thoughts about the future of our country and the children. However, had I been present in the Manekshaw Centre, I would asked him why the inflation is too high in India,’ said Kajal, a student of NP Co-ed senior secondary Havlec Square School.

Fifty students from the NDMC-run schools got an opportunity to go to Manekshaw Centre to listen to the PM’s speech live.

On reports that some schools are evaluating students on the speech, Chaturvedi and school principals denied any such plan in the NDMC-run schools. ‘We are not evaluating students on this, everything should not be seen from the examination point of view,’ the prime minister said.

However, attendance was fragmented in some schools owing to rains. Also, due to lack of big halls, speech was shown in groups and students in some schools could not listen to the full address, NDMC officials said. The attendance in the event was not compulsory, they added.
