AAP has blamed Bharatiya Janata Party-linked groups for the attack on its office in Kaushambhi located close to chief minister Arvind Kejriwal’s house.
‘It was around 10.55 am when some 30 to 40 men came in six SUVs and barged into the party’s office waving flags and with sticks in hand. They pelted stones breaking the glass windows. They also broke the flower pots and abused AAP leaders and workers,’ AAP leader Dilip Pandey said.
‘We called the UP police around 11.10 am. The police reached here after 11 minutes by then the attackers had fled from the spot. Before leaving they threatened to target AAP leaders in future too,’ Pandey added.
Pandey said the men belonged to a group called Hindu Raksha Dal and the outfit’s banner was at the site.
A party worker named Poonam was reportedly hurt in the incident. The attackers allegedly manhandled another woman leader, however, AAP workers managed to save her. At the time of the attack about 45 people were present at the office.
Meanwhile, Bhushan blamed the BJP and its allied groups for the attack. ‘The attack on our office and its supporters shows the tremendous frustration of the BJP and the Sangh Parivar over the rise of the AAP,’ Bhushan told the media.
BJP, however, condemned the incident later in the day. ‘We condemn the attack. No one has a right to take the law in their hands. But we must not forget the comments Bhushan made. We condemn that (too),’ BJP spokesperson, Nirmala Sitharaman, said.
Bhushan a Supreme Court lawyer had on Monday said that deployment of armed forces in large numbers in Jammu and Kashmir must be done with people’s wishes and had called for a referendum on the issue.
Hours after the attack, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal questioned the miscreants’ motive and wondered whether they wanted to kill him and Prashant Bhushan because of the latter’s remarks on Kashmir.
‘Let us assume that Prashant Bhushan indeed said something objectionable, so what do they want? Do they want to kill Prashantji?’ he questioned.
