Mizo woman found dead in Delhi, police suspect foul play

Update: 2014-10-18 00:07 GMT
A day before her death, which police is now suspecting to be murder, a party was on in the one-room flat in which Juliet Zonunmawi was staying for the last few months. Her live-in partner, identified as Virender Singh, and other persons have been detained by the police and are being questioned.

At around 11 pm, Singh took Zonunmawi to Safdarjung hospital where doctors declared her brought dead. The hospital staff informed the police about the case. Zonunmawi had sustained head injuries as well as stab wounds in her abdomen and thigh.

Zonunmawi is a resident of Aizawl in Mizoram and had come to Delhi around five years ago. She was staying with Singh who is a native of Uttarakhand’s Haldwani area and was unemployed. He is an engineering graduate and was preparing for civil services examination.

When the police team reached her rented accommodation, blood stains with imprints of footwear were found outside the main gate and on stairs. Preliminarily investigation suggests she was stabbed to death with a knife and was hit with a blunt object after a domestic quarrel. A racial angle in the crime has been ruled out by the police.

‘A Central Forensic Science Laboratory team has collected evidence from the spot and her body has been preserved at the mortuary. After her family members reach, her body will be sent for postmortem examination. A medical team has also been constituted to conduct the postmortem,’ said a police official.

So far no arrests have been made. A case under the sections of 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered at Vasant Vihar police station against unknown persons.

After the incident came to light, people from the northeast gathered outside the local police station and protested against the attacks on people from the region. The crime comes barely 24 hours after two men from the North East, both call centre workers, were beaten with cricket bats in a room they rented in Gurgaon near Delhi.
