It was a mixed day for the Indian shuttlers at the Malaysia Grand Prix Gold badminton tournament as R M V Gurusaidutt, K Srikanth and Sameer Verma won their respective first round matches while the others crashed out of the men’s singles event in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday.
The 11th seeded Gurusaidutt prevailed over Chao Huang of Singapore 21-19 14-21 21-17 in a battle that lasted 47 minutes. He would meet local player, Giap Chin Goh, in the second round.
Sameer got the better of Wei Jian Ai of Malaysia 21-10 21-9 to enter the second round, while Srikanth outplayed Sung Min Park of Korea 21-13 21-11.
It took Sameer just 26 minutes to down his opponent and he will take on fourth seeded Wei Feng Chong of Malaysia. Srikanth defeated his opponent in 27 minutes to set up a round two clash with Suppanyu Avihingsanon, seeded 14th.
However, the other Indians in the fray -- Oscar Bansal and Abhimanyu Singh -- failed to cross the first-round hurdle.
Bansal fought hard before going down to Beryno Jiann Tze Wong of Malaysia 21-7 16-21 15-21 in 36 minutes, while Abhimanyu handed Hong Kong’s Yan Kit Chan a walkover in the first round. Earlier, H S Prannoy had got a walkover in the opening round after Tommy Sugiarto withdrew from the competition. Prannoy will face local lad Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, none of the Indians who were in the qualification round, could make it to the main draw summing India’s day.

The just-concluded third edition of the India Open Super Series here has created a market buzz for more international events. The Badminton World Federation (BWF) is obviously pleased with the way the $200,000 event was organised at the Siri Fort Sports Complex as it did not waste time in recognising the Indian leg on a par with other major Super Series. The event, originally allotted for three years in 2011, got an extension till 2017 last year. The immediate offshoot of the successful conduct of the Tier-2 event at the Siri Fort world class infrastructure is the allotment of the prestigious Tier-1 2014 Thomas Cup and Uber Cup finals to India. The BWF is looking for huge success.
