In yet another incident of crime committed against minors in the national capital, an eight-year-old girl was allegedly molested by a man at Timarpur area in northern Delhi, on Friday.

Both the victim and the accused, Pashupati Nath (38), lived in the same area at Sanjay Basti in north Delhi’s Timarpur. The accused got hold of the victim, when she was searching for her kite on Friday afternoon, and confined her in a room for two hours, where he allegedly molested her.

Meanwhile, police received a phone call from the locals, who had caught the accused after they heard the victim screaming from the room where she was confined. Police reached the spot immediately and arrested the accused, said a police official.

Initially, the accused was being accused of attempting rape, but that has been ruled out by the police. ‘It is a case of molestation. The accused, a rickshaw-puller by profession, was known to the victim’s family,’ said Madhur Verma, Deputy Commissioner of Police (north). He further said, after preliminary investigations, it was found that the accused had molested the victim more than once in the past.

The accused has been booked under section 354 (molestation), section 342 (wrongful confinement), section 363 (kidnapping) of the IPC and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, said DCP Verma. ‘The victim was immediately sent for a medical examination and she was later given counselling by an NGO in the presence of her mother, as per directives,’ he added.
