A 17-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped by three youths in a car after she went with them for a drive in south Delhi’s posh Safdarjung Enclave area, police said on Wednesday.
The incident occurred on Tuesday night at around 8 pm when the victim was offered a ride by three youths, identified as Rohit, Tinku and Narender, who were known to her, they said.
‘According to the victim’s statement, the boys, who are between 20-22 years of age offered her some drink laced with sedatives. As she felt unconscious, they took turns to rape her in the car and then left her near her home and fled,’ a police official said.
The victim along with her family members lodged a complaint against the trio this morning.
After rape was confirmed in the medical examination of the girl, a case under section 376 of the IPC and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2012 (POCSO) was registered, police said.
The victim is a student at a private school here, while the accused used to stay nearby her house and were acquainted with the girl, which they took advantage of, police said.
Police have impounded the car used in the crime and a manhunt has been launched to nab the trio, who are absconding since the incident, police added.
In June 2013, the National Crime Records Bureau report ‘Crime in India-2012’, a total of 24,923 rape cases were registered last year, and in 24,470 cases of them, the accused were either relatives or acquaintances of the victims. This equates to almost 98 per cent of all registered rape cases.
