The index of mineral production of the mining and quarrying sector in September 2012 was lower by 2.6 per cent compared to that of the preceding month. However, the mineral sector demonstrated a a positive growth of 5.5 per cent during September 2012 compared to that of the corresponding month of the previous year.
The total value of mineral production (excluding atomic and minor minerals) in the country during September 2012 was Rs 14,785 crore. The contribution of crude petroleum was the highest at Rs 5,600 crore (38 per cent). Next in order of contribution were coal (Rs 4,137 crore), iron ore (Rs 2,321 crore), (utilised) natural gas (Rs 1,221 crore), lignite (Rs 355 crore) and limestone (Rs 335 crore).
These six minerals together contributed about 94 per cent of the total value of the country’s mineral production in September 2012. The output level of key minerals in September 2012 were 361 lakh tonnes of coal, 31 lakh tonnes of lignite, 3263 million cu m of natural gas (utilised), 31 lakh tonnes of crude petroleum, 1,268 thousand tonnes of bauxite, 223,000 tonnes of chromite, 10, tonnes of copper conc, 124 kg of gold, 94 lakh tonnes of iron ore, 14,000 tonnes of lead conc, 159,000 tonnes of manganese ore,118,000 tonnes of zinc conc, 163,000 tonnes of apatite & phosphorite, 400,000 tonnes of dolomite, 214 lakh tonnes of limestone, 4,000 tonnes of magnesite and 2,515 carat of diamond.
