Metro station at Jamia to be relocated

Update: 2012-08-09 02:50 GMT
Regarding the stiff opposition from the Jamia Milia Islamia over construction of a Metro station inside its campus, a high level meeting was convened on Wednesday. It was attended by Delhi chief secretary P K Tripathi, Delhi Metro chief Mangu Singh and Jamia vice chancellor Najeeb Jung.

According to sources, Delhi Metro has decided to conduct a study to explore the feasibility of shifting the proposed station from its current location.

‘The study will be conducted in a week’s time and a report would be submitted to the Delhi Metro. The station may not be moved from the institution area entirely but from the current location of the campus gardens,’ a source said.

Talking to Millennium Post, Metro spokesperson Anuj Dayal said, ‘We are working out on the feasibility of other places of Jamia, if not inside the university campus.’

Sources said Metro has no plans to shift the station from Jamia Nagar area, which has poor transport facilities and the proposed Metro connectivity would help thousands of people in Jamia Nagar, Batla House and Zakir Nagar areas.

The proposed Jamia Nagar Metro station, part of which was planned to be built inside the gardens of the prestigious university, is part of the 33.5 km Janakpuri West to Kalindi Kunj Metro corridor under Phase-III.

Earlier, objections were raised by the Jamia VC and law minister Salman Khurshid, saying it would bring insecurity issues and may disrupt campus life.

Khurshid had red-flagged the construction of the Jamia Nagar station reportedly saying that the station could prove to be a security threat and ‘spoil the sanctity’ of the institute.

Khurshid also wrote to union Human Resource Development minister Kapil Sibal on 27 July urging him to intervene in the interest of the ‘very important historical university’ of the capital.
‘Opening up the heart of the university to a station would lead to enormous problems of security as well as sanctity of the university campus,’ Khurshid wrote in the letter. His letter said the issue should be considered at the highest level and appropriate remedial steps be taken.

Two stations have been proposed on either side of the road that leads to the campus, one near Escorts Hospital and the other close to Jamia police station.

The station around the Jamia Milia Islamia campus would benefit at least 20,000 people, including students, once Metro operations start on the corridor.

Sources said the Delhi Metro would closely coordinate with the university authorities in this regard.
