MCD workers continue protest, talks fail to end deadlock

Irked by the unnecessary delay in payment, the fourth-grade employees dumped tonnes of garbage across various junctions of the city, with the intention of disrupting daily proceedings. Not only did they dump garbage at public places and refuse to collect waste from residential areas, they also gheraoed the Corporation offices, thereby leading to traffic snarls in the eastern and northern parts of the city.

On Monday morning, more than 10,000 safaikarmis, under the banner of various organisations, hit the roads. The agitated workers, who have not collected garbage since Friday last, dumped heaps of waste in the middle of key roads, traffic junctions and public places. Holding placards, banners and posters in their hands, the workers stopped traffic movement.

The protesters, who have not received salaries since February, stopped other Corporations employees too, who were on duty. They have threatened to intensify their protest if their demands were not met by the civic agencies.

A physical survey of the area revealed a sordid state of affair and the failure of government bodies to tackle the issue. Roads between Wazirabad and Anand Vihar and Patparganj to Laxminagar turned into dump-yards as the workers were seen dumping garbage across every 100 to 200 metres. Not just the roads, even the entry and exit points of residential colonies were seen littered with garbage.

“We have asked the employees not to collect waste from households, to throw the garbage from Dhalaos at roads as the civic agency has failed to meet our demands,” said Shubhash Kumar, who was participating in a protest at GTB hospital.

The workers also created ruckus at the headquarters of East and North Corporations. At EDMC, they sat at dharna at main entrance. The workers sought slogans against the state government as well as Centre. Few of the safaikarmis also met with the EDMC commissioner, mayor and Standing Committee chairman for the immediate release of salaries up to March but the talks between them failed to reach conclusion.
