The alleged mastermind behind Sunday’s escape of 33 juveniles from a correctional home in Delhi was arrested on Thursday from Sarai Kale Khan Bus stand.

Early on Saturday morning, 33 juveniles lodged in Sewa Kutir juvenile home managed to escape the premises after vandalising the place. Delhi police has so far managed to arrest 15 of those who escaped from the premises.

P Karunakaran, deputy commissioner of police (south-east) said, ‘Police received a tip-off that one of the accused who fled on Sunday was going to come to Sarai Kale Khan bus stand. A team of officers in civil dress reached the spot and laid a trap. The minor reached the place at around 11 am with the aim of pick pocketing.’

The minor was caught red-handed. During sustained interrogation, he confessed that he had provoked the minors in the juvenile home to demand drugs. ‘When the demand was not met, I provoked them to pelt stones and go violent,’ he told the police.

The arrested minor has a tainted criminal background and faces charges of murder, attempt to murder and firing at police officers. ‘Fifteen of those who were caught had claimed that the 17-year-old threatened them all with dire consequences if they did not join him in his plan. Feeling helpless, they supported him,’ police said.

Late on Saturday evening he provoked inmates, following which the juveniles started pelting stones and smashing window panes. They exploded the cylinders kept in the kitchen and stole Rs 35,000 by breaking up the cash chest inside Sewa Kutir.

At the time of the incident, there were 127 juveniles inside the rehabilitation centre in north Delhi’s Mukherjee Nagar.
