Delhi police chief BS Bassi on Friday claimed that the rise in crime cases was a result of the police registering more FIRs. However, a shocking case of police apathy came to light on the very same day Bassi made the claim.
A 35-year-old married woman working in an MNC in south Delhi’s RK Puram area has alleged that she was raped by her Business Group Manager, while 11 others, including the CEO of the company, sought sexual favours from her. The woman has also alleged that the police refused to lodge an FIR in the case.
The victim claims that she approached RK Puram police station about half a dozen times but they did not register her complaint. She also wrote a letter to the Prime Minister and the Home Ministry but failed to get any response. On 2 January, a local court took cognisance of the matter and asked the SHO to submit the status report in the case.
In her complaint to the court, the victim has alleged that she that while joining the company in 2009 she was asked to submit her original documents and was made to sign to sign two blank papers. She was also asked to share her e-mail ID and password.
‘After nine months of her tenure, the senior staff members verbally instructed her to establish physical relations with their clients. When she refused, they started harassing her and forced her to bring some of her friends and female clients to satisfy the staff,’ Megha Batra victim’s associate advocate said.
The victim approached Pawan Bhalla, managing director of the company, seeking help who instead of helping her asked her to compromise. ‘He told me that having a physical relationship to gain professional benefits is mandatory,’ the victim told Millennium Post.
On 25 October, 2013, she was allegedly called at the company’s Gurgaon office for some work where she was raped by Rahul Singh, BGM. The victim allegedly reported the matter to Nitin Kaul, director legal, who told her to go on a month-long leave in which time he would investigate the matter.
‘On 3 December, I went to RK Puram police station and found the SHO absent. I again visited the police station on 5 December where the duty officer told her that the SHO is busy. Again and again I visited the police station but the cops allegedly did not register her complaint neither took her for the medical examination. They told me to not register the case else my married life would be miserable as the accused are big names,’ the victim alleged. When Millennium Post tried to contact the concerned official he refused to comment.
‘On 7 December, she wrote a letter to prime minister and the home minister. Failing to get any response she again made a request on 9 December,’ Megha said. Under section 156 (3) of CrpC, Patiala court has taken cognisance of the matter and sent a notice to RK Puram police station and asked them to submit a status report in the matter on 22 January.
