Manmohan Singh was not alone in recommending security for Sinh. Former governor of Bihar Devanand Konwar too pitched hard for Sinh’s security. Many have questioned that since Sinh is from Assam, why Konwar (being the governor of Bihar) was taking interest in Sinh’s security.

‘Konwar might be from Assam but holding a position of governor, it is a shame that he had pitched for Sinh’s security,’ sources said. He was the governor of Bihar from June 2009 to March 2013.

In his letter to the former, Konwar mentions that even PM had personally intervened and instructed the union home ministry to do to the needful when it comes to his security. The letter (in possession of Millennium Post) written by Konwar on 30 July, 2012, to then PM, reads, ‘Sir, I would like to refresh you that you yourself intervened and directed the then home secretary to provide ‘Z’ category CRPF security cover to Shri Sinh (sic).’

‘Sir, it appears inexplicable the stonewalling of the Home Ministry in matters of providing urgent central paramilitary forces security coverage to prominent and vulnerable linguistic minority leaders like Matang Sinh. I therefore request you to please direct the home secretary to immediately provide Z plus CRPF security cover to Shri Matang Sinh in Northeast region,’ his letter further reads.

Even senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh supported Sinh on the issue and four days after Konwar’s letter, he (Digvijaya) wrote a letter to former PM asking to do the needful at the earliest.

His letter to PM on 4 August, 2012, reads, ‘You may please recall, I had written to you twice earlier about the need to provide Z-plus category (CRPF) security cover in North East region for Shri Matang Sinh. Even when we briefly discussed this issue you had shown your concern and assured that his security would be taken care off.’ It has been learnt that amid all controversies, the review panel of MHA, designated for VIP securities, is planning to curtail the protection of few politicians and
individuals, which also include Sinh.

In August this year, CBI had raided Sinh’s residences across the country including in the national capital and in Assam after his name came out during the probe in the ponzi scam. Even, one of the prime accused Sudipta Sen, owner of Saradha Group of Companies, in a letter to CBI has mentioned that Sinh has taken Rs 28 crore. Ever since the scam came in lime light, the country has been fuming but Sinh has continued to flaunt his power and reportedly pressured the Ministry of Home Affairs and PMO through various influential leaders to secure his Z-category security.
