A man was arrested by CISF at IGI airport while he was allegedly smuggling 1.5 kg gold. The accused arrived from Dubai on Friday.

‘We received an information from a source about gold smuggling by a passenger who was arriving
from Dubai. Immediately, the surveillance and intelligence team of CISF rushed to the international arrival pier area’, said a CISF spokesperson.

They observed a passenger hurriedly coming out from washroom. The team got a message that a packet which contained a mobile phone like substance was lying unattended inside the said washroom.

Accordingly, the team went to the washroom and recovered the packet. ‘It was found to be a gold bar in the shape of mobile phone, weighing about 1.5 kg’, the officer added.

In the mean time, the suspected passenger left the terminal building.

The CCTV footage was reviewed and it was observed that a airport staff, later identified as Ansar, a resident of Thrissur, Kerala was found to be in contact with that suspected passenger. He had also left the airport with the passenger in the same taxi. Based on the CCTV footage, Ansar was called at the airport and on thorough interrogation he confessed about his involvement in gold smuggling.

The recovered gold along with Ansar was handed over to customs officials for further action, said the spokesperson.
