A 35-year-old habitual offender has been arrested for kidnapping-cum-murder of an eight-year-old girl who also became a victim of attempt to rape in west Delhi’s Khayala area.

The incident took place on Tuesday morning when the parents of the deceased girl were out for work. Finding her alone at home, Gian Chand alias Seth entered the girl’s house. Chand lured the girl on the pretext that her mother was calling her.

‘The girl locked the doors and went with him. Chand took the girl to an area near Railway Lines in Pachim Vihar. He tried to assault the girl, but she raised an alarm. Hearing her screams and scared of being caught, Chand lost his temper and hit the girl with a stone on her head, which led to her death. He, however, managed to escape from the spot,’ Ranvir Singh, deputy commissioner of police (west) said.

During the investigation, the local police scrutinised the record of police stations and shortlisted the criminals involved in committing similar crimes. Local intelligence was activated and sources were deployed. Finally, on the basis of the description given by the local residents, Chand was picked up for interrogation.

On sustained interrogation Chand confessed to his crime and directed the police to the body of the girl. Chand had two criminal cases against him, both registered at Rajouri Garden police station. He was charged in a case of murder and remained in Tihar Jail for six years after being arrested in 1995. In the recent case, he has been booked for kidnapping and murder.
