The victim, Sanjay Chautala (42), was the husband of Selja’s domestic help, Manju, who lived in the servants’ quarters allotted adjacent to the bungalow. Police say the death was ‘unnatural’ but no case was registered till evening.
The police received a call around 8 am, on Monday, from a staff at the Congress leader’s bungalow. He reportedly found Sanjay’s body in the lawn, in a chest-upward position, close enough to the bungalow to suggest death by falling from the 15-feet high terrace. ‘But there are multiple wounds on the victim’s body and it is clear that the death was unnatural,’ said Mukesh Kumar Meena, Joint Commissioner of Police (New Delhi range).
There were wounds on the victim’s neck, back, hands and front part of the torso. ‘But that is insufficient to conclude whether that was a result of a struggle or a free fall from the terrace,’ said SBS Tyagi, Additional Commissioner of Police (New Delhi). He said: ‘We have come across no clue to suggest that it was a case of suicide.’
Police is interrogating all twelve who live in the servants’ quarters. ‘Things are unclear right now. We are investigating the case from all possible angles,’ said SBS Tyagi. He said no case has been registered yet and the police is also awaiting the post-mortem report, which shall take at least another day.
Relatives of the victim have, however, alleged Selja’s cook, Anil (26), and cleaner, Sanju (27), are the killers. ‘They had a fight with Sanjay around a month ago. Since then, they had constantly been pestering the couple about leaving the accommodation,’ said Veena, the victim’s sister-in-law.
‘Sanjay worked as the supervisor of sweepers at the Sena Bhawan premises and Manju had been working at Selja’s bungalow for the past eight to nine months, before being replaced by another maid recently. Hence, they were asked to vacate the allotted quarter by Sunday,’ Veena added.
