Man arrested from IGI for smuggling memory cards of Rs 22 lakh

A man was arrested at the IGI airport here for allegedly possessing memory cards worth over Rs 22 lakh and was later released on bail.

Acting on an intelligence input that memory cards are being smuggled into India from Bangkok, discreet surveillance was kept by Customs department and Munish Kumar, a resident of Karnal in Haryana was intercepted at the exit gate of Green Channel and diverted for scanning of his baggage.

"During the scanning it was noticed that he (Kumar) was carrying memory cards concealed in the card board boxes of Chivas Regal instead of liquor in it," said V K Goel, Commissioner (Imports and General).

The passenger had arrived from Hong Kong yesterday.

The total value of 12,400 memory cards of 2GB each recovered and seized from Kumar is Rs 22.28 lakh, he said.

The accused was arrested under relevant sections of Customs Act and later released on bail on execution of bail bond for Rs one lakh.

Two other passengers were also arrested during the month for smuggling memory cards.

While, Amritsar-based Baljinder Singh was arrested on April 6 with memory cards worth Rs 19 lakh, another passenger Vinay Kumar was arrested on April 4, with 7,614 memory cards valuing worth Rs 14.43 lakh. Both had come from Hong Kong.
