The West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said in the state assembly that her government would work towards enabling Bengal to regain its position as one of the top performing states of India, which can excel in all spheres.

Addressing an august gathering that saw even veteran Leftist leaders like Somnath Chatterjee and Hashim Abdul Halim, who was speaker of the assembly, in attendance, Banerjee said, 'It is a big day today and we are all here to commemorate the completion of 75 years of state assembly. I am proud to be part of this house which has been witness to an industrious past with many incidents and people making their mark. I express my respect to the highest seat of democracy.' The chief minister was speaking at a glittering function that marked 75 years of the West Bengal Bidhan Sabha.

Banerjee – who has served seven terms in the Parliament and is doing her first term in the Bidhan Sabha – said that the assembly building was getting cramped as it needed better infrastructure facilities, like a library, archives, museum and better conservation of statues and photographs.

The West Bengal governor M K Narayanan said in his address that the West Bengal Bidhan Sabha has seen many landmark legislations in the past that upheld the cause of democracy, like the West Bengal Land Reforms Act, 1974, the West Bengal Labour Welfare Fund Act, 1974, the West Bengal Zilla Parishad Act, 1963. Banerjee added two legislations to the governor’s list, the Singur Land Acquisition Act, 2011, and the Private University Bill passed in the assembly this year.

Interestingly, Banerjee paid respect to veteran legislators of past governments, like Bidhan Chandra Ray, the first chief minister of Bengal, Prafulla Sen, Siddhartha Sankar Ray, Jyoti Basu and Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee. There were words of recognition for her party veterans, like Subrata Mukherjee, Sougata Ray and Sudip Bandopadhyay. She also acknowledged the presence of former ministers of the Left Front government Anisur Rahman and Rezzak Mollah at the gathering.
