Even while flagging off the ‘Uttar Banga Utsav’ in Siliguri on Monday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee justified the state government's expenditure on various festivals, criticised by her detractors.
Banerjee said that the erstwhile CPI government had squandered a lot of money on supporting ‘cadres’. ‘On Monday we have inaugurated the Uttar Banga Utsav. Our focus is Cooch Behar and South Dinajpur. We have conferred Bongo Shomman on personalities in past and we will continue to do so in future. Many criticise saying we are organizing festivals, what is wrong if we celebrate the good work done in in the State’, said Banerjee.
On Tuesday the Chief Minister is supposed to go to Darjeeling to attend some key government functions including inauguration of Lamahat tourist centre and opening of Bijanbari bridge.
Banerjee is expected to meet key Morcha (the ruling party in the Hills) leaders like the GJM president Bimal Gurung and Roshan Giri, who will be returning from Delhi on Tuesday.
