Concerned over the flood situation in South Bengal which killed more than 50 people including four children, besides rendering over 36 lakh people homeless, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday announced that Bengal government will provide Rs four lakh each to the families of those killed in flood and storm.
According to the disaster management department sources, more than 12 districts were hit hard by the flood damaging nearly two lakh houses and 4,72,645-hectre crop area.
During her visit to a school at Ashok Nagar in North 24 Parganas district which is being operated as a relief centre, Banerjee said the Bengal government will provide Rs 2 lakh to those who lost their limbs and Rs 60,000 for other injured. “The CM will stay overnight at the state secretariat ‘Nabanna’ and will personally coordinate relief efforts,” a Bengal secretariat official said.
Besides flood, the area was affected by a major storm last week in which several houses were damaged. The state government will help those people who lost their homes and crops in the flood, Banerjee said, adding BDOs and SDOs were asked to prepare a list of such victims. Meanwhile Banerjee has postponed her North Bengal and Darjeeling trip due to the ongoing flood situation, the official added.
Following the overnight downpour, buildings with weak structures collapsed in many places, including in Kolkata.
According to reports, two people were killed in a building collapse in Katwa, an elderly man was crushed to death after a portion of his house collapsed in Kolkata, a two-year-old was killed in wall collapse in Murshidabad district while a similar death was also reported in Bankura district.
“Altogether 1,537 relief camps have been set up to provide shelter to more than 2.14 lakh marooned people and 204 medical camps have been opened,” sources said.
In individual messages to the Governors of flood-hit states including West Bengal, President Pranab Mukherjee condoled the loss of lives due to Cyclone Komen and the floods. The Durgapur barrage in Bengal was scheduled to release about 65,000 cusecs of water on Sunday, with authorities warning that the release may go up to 90,000 cusecs.
